American Flagfish
(Jordanella floridae)

A native of Florida which is said to be happy at lower temperatures. The mature adults are really "chunky" fish, the male especially developing quite an arched back and deep body. Living outside the USA I rarely see these fish which aren't often imported. So, as they're a bit of a rarity here, I won't risk mine at anything below normal tropical temperatures. But what is a realistic minimum temperature for them? John Cornelius, in an article on coldwater tropicals, says that he wintered them at 10° C. If you have experience of this species as a coldwater fish, please let me know so I can update this page. In the meantime try exploring these excellent links: BAP Report - Jordanella floridae, by L. & M. Bellino, and Jordanella floridae spawning by Anna Stevenson. Over the years there have been many articles on this fish in the tropical fish hobby press including those written by: L. A. Jackson, L and J Sellers, and Ann Walker.
