The Mosquito Fish
(Gambusia affinis)

Gambusia affinis, ranging originally from Virginia to Florida, has been introduced to waterways in the writer's home area which go down to 5° C or lower in the winter. It seems that they suffer quite a mortality at these temperatures, but enough survive to continue the species the following spring. They are not ideal community fish as they are well known for biting the fins of other larger fish. Gambusia, like nearly all livebearers, are easy to breed, though they see their own progeny as a gourmet delicacy. There is a spotted variety sometimes known as the 'leopard fish' ( var holbrooki) which makes an attractive fish for a single species tank. But there is also a similar, but more peaceful livebearer bearing the same common name, Phalloceros that makes a more desirable aquarium subject.
