Mark Owen
I began fishkeeping in my youth with some goldfish and native fish collected
from ponds in the south of England. When my peers at school were decorating
their exercise books with aircraft and weapons I was drawing tropical fish.
I have continued to keep fish on and off during the following decades and at
present have some ten tanks scattered around the house and in the garage. I'm not
really into using filters and all the fancy gadgets but prefer natural tanks
with a low stocking rate. I have soil under the gravel to encourage plant growth,
do partial water changes and keep plenty of snails to break down surplus food
and fish wastes. Outside I have half a dozen 200 Litre plastic drums cut in
half to make small, cheap ponds for goldfish, "cool tropicals" and plants.
One day I'm going to get myself organised and have a proper fish room!
